Sandvik – Avoidance of metal dusting
During steam reforming or synthetic gas production, metal dusting destroys heat exchangers made of most metallic materials, including nickel alloys. New materials that withstand metal dusting is required to make a technology shift possible. Metal dusting is a catastrophic form of corrosion that occurs when susceptible materials are exposed to environments with high carbon activity. The corrosion manifests itself as a break-up of bulk metal to metal powder.
There is currently no known construction material immune to metal dusting, despite more than 25 years of Intensive research.
